Find Hope Today hosted a Hope and Health Online Event using Google Hangouts entitled The Best Health Care You Can Get for Free. The webinar was hosted by Paolo Esposito with Joel Sam. As their guest, they had Dr. James Gulley, who is the Director of Medical Oncology at the Center for Cancer Research of the National Cancer Institute. He has also been a part of the National Cancer Institute for 16 years.
In the video they discussed some of the major issues in the United States today both with health and health care. The focus in the US is treatment of diseases and illnesses rather than focusing on preventing them. It is more cost effective to prevent diseases than it is to treat them. This is compounded by the fact that many Americans have less access to health care due to limited education, understanding, and financial resources. They not only don’t have the money to buy healthier foods, but also often don’t have the time to care for their personal health.
Statistics state that 70 percent of deaths in the US are from chronic illness. Billions of dollars go into treating these illnesses after they are diagnosed, while minimal amounts are spent on preventing them. In the US 50 percent of the deaths are caused by three diseases – heart disease, stroke, and cancer. However, 1 in 5 Americans smoke or use tobacco products, 1 in 6 binge drink, and 1 in 3 are obese. These are all things that are within a person’s power to change.
There are four major factors that are modifiable that greatly reduce the risk of developing a chronic disease – diet, exercise, tobacco use, and alcohol use. By controlling these factors, the risk is reduced by 50 percent.
What are the most important factors of a healthy diet?
The healthiest diet for our bodies is one that contains food that are close to their natural form. Avoid processed foods, such as refined foods, sugars, saturated fats, and foods high in fat content. Less than 30 percent of your calories should come from those types of food. Keeping natural foods as close to their natural forms retains the most health benefits, such as steaming vegetables or raw foods. Whole grains, nuts, lean meats, and fish should all make up your diet.
If your food can go bad – it is good for you.
If your food can’t go bad – it is bad for you.
Is a Vegan or Vegetarian diet healthy?
Vegan or Vegetarian diets give your body everything it needs, as long as you eat a balanced diet in moderation. Having meat in your diet is not unhealthy if you eat the right meats and limit the portions. Starting out slowly, eliminating meat from one or two meals a week can progress as you adapt to the new diet changes. Or, reduce the portion sizes of the meats you are eating. Highly processed meats, such as hot dogs or lunch meats should be removed from your diet.
Which is more important – good nutrition or exercise?
The answer is both are essential to good health.
Most Americans work at sedentary jobs and do little exercise. For a healthy life, you should exercise moderately for 30 minutes per day at least five days a week.
What is moderate exercise?
One that is free and easy to do is walking. You want to increase your pace to a point where you are breathing hard enough that a long sentence takes two breaths. Biking, jogging, and swimming are other great forms of moderate exercise. A pedometer can help you determine how active your lifestyle is. Less than 5,000 steps a day is sedentary. Over 10,000 steps is an active lifestyle. You want to get up and walk around for at least 10 minutes several times a day to improve your health.
Does being healthy also help if you already have a chronic disease?
Healthy patients who contract a chronic disease respond better to treatments, heal faster, and have less risk of relapse. Healthy patients who had cancer removed had a 50 percent less chance of it coming back. Exercise boosts the immune system and increases the number of natural killer cells or cells that fight disease.
It is never too late to make healthy changes and the benefits to the changes can begin almost immediately. The greatest key to being healthy is to make the choice yourself and stick to it. You need to have the desire to change. These changes don’t have to cost anything, they simply require you to make the decision to be healthier.
By the way we have an exciting 8 Week Health class starting on May 28th, where you will learn even more information on ways to get healthy and stay healthy.
